Vanessa Jared struggles to find her path in life after divorcing her emotionally abusive husband, Karl. She did squeeze as much money as she could out of him, and now she’s filthy rich. But she is not alone–she became best friends with her girls Janae and Cree, forming the Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club.
She wants nothing to do with Karl until this hottie, Michael Park, meets Vanessa and asks her to help him stop his sister Cindy from marrying Karl. At first, she feels like it’s none of her business, but when Michael pulls out a picture of them, Vanessa spots her grandmother’s ring around Cindy’s finger. And with that, she agrees as long as Michael gets her ring back, romancing and seducing each other in the process.
This book was a comfort read, especially when I witnessed the girls hanging out and being their sassy, supportive selves. When they tease Vanessa about getting naughty with Michael, it’s just dumb fun. When Vanessa hints at what her marriage with Karl was like, Janae and Cree are sensitive and make sure Vanessa sets the pace for that conversation.
The spice and the romance are so sweet :’). I don’t remember when Vanessa and Michael first kiss, but the tension and yearning grow with their feelings throughout the book.
I was expecting more drama considering Vanessa and Michael are trying to break up Cindy and Karl, but the plot takes a backseat in the story, and it gets resolved quickly. There is more focus on the development of Vanessa and Michael's relationship, which is not bad, but this is more fitting for someone who cares about the romance more than the plot. As for me, I wanted the best of both worlds.
Sometimes I was turned off by the writing because someone would say or do something that didn't warrant an explanation, but the narration would explain what they meant anyways, and it was unnecessary and redundant.
Overall, it was a pleasant read! I don't often get to read romance books with characters in their 40s finding love, which is ridiculous!
3.5 stars from me!
